I would be especially interested in sweet chestnut poles for a project I am hoping to start which is to make a cleft wood yurt (traditional circular tent based on Mongolian/Turkish designs). I gather that there are quite a few people growing chestnuts for the nut harvest but is anyone growing them as coppice for the wood? It is a traditional fencing material in the UK, being extremely durable. Alternatively, would sweet chestnut poles of up to 3m length be available as a result of thinning operations in developing nut plantations? I have recently migrated here with my family from Scotland and are currently renting a house in Te Aroha. On another note, I am a very experienced demonstrator of greenwood crafts, especially pole-lathe turning. I was employed to demonstrate at the National Scottish Woodworking Show at the Glasgow SECC for the last eight consecutive years...
