Information Request:

Hi, I was interested in seeing whether I could grow Pistachios. Could you put me onto a site which tells me the conditions needed to grow these and whether Wellington is a capable area.

Thanks.

Dear Jane, try asking John Prince. I've never thought of growing them here in Wanganui. Roy Hart in Nelson has some pistachio material, most people growing them only have the rootstock.
There is mention of pistachios in the research report in the latest TreeCropper, which came out this week [and web site Reports page].

My firm advice is to buy some frosty land in Nelson or Marlborough. Pistacios need winter frosts and summer dry heat. There are currently to my knowledge no varieties available that do not need these requirements. You may perhaps with glasshouse growing imitate these conditions, but the cost is not viable.
