Another, earlier, from a prospective member:
Hello,
I am currently in the first stages of a move to New Zealand (North
Canterbury region - under long term business visa) and want to start a
tree cropping business (Hazelnuts and Chestnuts). In order for me to
get the long term visa (besides making complete sense), I need to
produce a business plan. With this in mind I wonder if you would be
kind enough to supply me with pointers to information which would help
bring the document together.
Really, I need to know what the costs are in setting up the operation (I
am hoping to buy around 30 hectares or so) i.e. buying and planting
costs (how long before we can produce a saleable crop), yearly
maintenance costs, labour requirements, co-operative costs, competition
and what the market is like now and forecasted to be in the future.
Any pointers at all would be most gratefully received.
Kind regards. David, in Devon. Sunday, 23 February 2003.

All this is available from Lincoln University, Hazel growers Assn., and The Chestnut Council.
Tree Crops has a fact sheet on both crops a few years old now, but still ok.
The are lots of people in the Assn. that know plenty about them.
Search Murray Redpath on Hazels.
Search Dr David Klinac on Chestnuts.
