Pre-conference Tour

Aoraki Branch NZTCA are offering a pre conference tour to points of interest around Oamaru on Wednesday 23 April 2003. You would need to stay in Oamaru Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

A good range of accommodation is available in Oamaru including the centrally situated Brydone Hotel at $74 per room, Motels, YHA and Backpackers.

Note that, if you are flying to Dunedin or Christchurch for the Conference, there are regular Intercity buses and shuttles to Oamaru from both cities.

The tour will cost $30 and will include bus hire, morning tea, and a very good lunch at Duntroon Tavern. Payment should be included with your registration. Cheques should be made payable to "New Zealand Tree Crops Association Aoraki Branch".

PROGRAMME

9 a.m. Meet outside the Brydone Hotel.

  • Morning tea at Anne Cowie's cherry orchard. Anne will show you her 2000 cherry trees growing in bags and under cover
  • Travel up the Waitaki Valley looking at points of interest.
  • Visit Helen Brooks' orchard. Helen has a microclimate and grows an interesting variety of fruits and nuts.
  • Continue to Duntroon for lunch at Duntroon Tavern.
  • During the Afternoon we will circle back to Oamaru via the Maori Rock Art, Elephant Rocks, The Whale Fossil and Parkside Limestone Quarry where we will see how they cut the limestone blocks used in building and stone carving.
  • Optional evening visit to Penguin Colony.

Option for Thursday 24th when heading to Dunedin.

  • Joy Green will welcome visitors to her small olive grove in the heart of Oamaru.
  • Tricia Pope has a mixed orchard of walnuts, hazels, almonds, olives, sugar maples and cherries at Reidston. She will be pleased to show you around then you can take the Kakanui scenic coast and on to the Moeraki Boulders.
