HAWKE’S BAY BRANCH FIELD TRIP: Feijoa orchard, Bee buzz plants, Heritage Roses
Paraire Road, Waikoko, Hastings. (Paraire is north side of Bay Express & Georges Drive)
Drive in the gate and follow the track around and park behind the house. Carpool where possible please.
We are most fortunate to have owners Georgina & Gary host us for this visit to their property. Aside from the Feijoa orchard, many of the plants we will see here were transplanted from the Wairarapa property where Georgina had been collecting plants for more than twenty years.
FEIJOA: Cheops Organic Feijoa Orchard
We start the visit with Gary taking us through their commercial Feijoa orchard which they purchased in winter 2005. Feijoa orchards are not commonly found in Hawke’s Bay, which means this visit gifts us a unique opportunity to learn from someone with nearly 10 years’ experience of Feijoa growing.
BEE: TreeCrops research project update
Chris will talk about the Bee research currently underway in New Zealand, specifically regards Buzz
plants, the value of access to pollen throughout the year. He will outline how our members can
participate by gathering practical information to help our branches involvement in this research.
ROSE: Heritage & New Zealand bred, set in complimentary plantings
Georgina will take us around her very special Rose collection where she grows over 1000 varieties in
an extensive thoughtfully landscaped garden. We will see many examples of Heritage roses, grown for both pleasure and conservation, and displayed to good effect with complimentary annuals, bulbs, perennials, and trees. There is also a collection of modern New Zealand bred roses, and `The McGredy Rose Garden’ for roses bred by the renowned McGredy family.
If you have old roses you would like identified then take some specimens along with you – the chance of going home from this particular garden with their proper name is pretty high!
LUNCH: The Telegraph Hill `Arts in the Olives’ is occurring nearby on this very same day. Treecroppers may wish to plan for having their picnic lunch at this event (a lunch purchased on-site or self-catered)
TreeCrop signs will be at the gate.
Toilet available on request, in the host’s house.
Rain or shine event.
