What:Dave and Jan's 6 hectare property is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when knowledge, clear goals, good planning and lots of hard work are combined. If you have any interest in organics or in permaculture it is a property you must visit.

April 2003

When: Sunday 13 April 2003, 10:30am
Where:Hall's, 124 Rangiora Road, Reikorangi, near Waikanae
What: This visit is in conjunction with the Wellington Horowhenua branch and will allow members to see those parts of the Hall property that were missed during an earlier visit.

Arthur is a Farm Forester and a Tree Cropper with a special interest in specialty timbers, and in oaks in particular. He has an extensive collection of oak varieties plus some outstanding young redwoods amongst his collection. For those with spare ground and an interest in growing high value timber trees this is a property to be visited!

November 2002

Where: 11am - barbecue facility at Bason Reserve, Rapanui Road, Wanganui
2pm - Garden Visit
What: Pot Luck social barbecue lunch, followed by a visit to Alex Garretts dramatic garden on the outskirts of Wanganui city. We are going to show you how professionals do layout and design. You can't do it later - design comes first!
 

October 2002 - field day

When: Saturday 5 October 2002, 10:30am
Where:At Aokautere in the UCOL (manawatu Polytech) property on Pinfold Road
What:Grafting Budding

This is a real opportunity to be shown, and then to practice, the skills involved in grafting and budding; skills that will allow you to produce your own trees.

The accumulated knowledge and experience of Stuart Rentoul, Colin Spicer and Mark Christensen will be available to get you started on learning these esential skills.

Practice on your worthless softwood and then move on to graft the trees you really want.
Bring:Your lunch and a drink -

For grafting you should bring:
  • A sharp knife, a Stanley knife with new blades can be used.
  • Any scion wood you have saved or collected (pip fruit, stone fruit or almonds)
  • Some soft wood, such as willow or poplar, for practicing on. (The practise wood should be about the thickness of a pencil or your little finger)
  • Grafting tape, and wound sealing paint, if you have any
  • Plastic bags to wrap the tree roots in on the way home
  • Some tie-on labels to identify your handiwork.
Apple and plum stocks will be available for purchase at the field day. They will be $2 each. Payment in cash please, no cheques or cards.

For those who do not have either grafting tape or wound sealing paint there will be some available for your use.
 

July 2002

When: Saturday 20 July, at 10:30 am
Where: Harrisons Trees, Aokautere
Bring:Your Lunch and a Drink.
What: The day's programme will be in two parts, in the morning pruning of pip and stone fruit trees and in the afternoon orchard planning.

Pruning

In the morning expert pruners will explain their pruning aims with each fruit variety and then demonstrate their skills on the peaches, nectarines, apples, pears and plums in Harrisons Organic block. This is an opportunity to hear and see experienced pruners explain what they are trying to achieve with each tree being pruned and then follow through with the actual pruning.

Orchard Planning

In the afternoon Colin Spicer from Kimbolton will lead a session on planning an orchard.
