Annual Waikato Tree and Plant Sale 2002

The day did not dawn bright and clear, but that only seemed to deter a few sellers and buyers. Again it lived up to its claim to be Hamilton’s biggest Bring-and-Buy event. It has become a major attraction for people of Hamilton and the surrounding area. Some travel from the Bay of Plenty, South Auckland and even from Auckland to attend. Winter is the ideal time for tree planting, and this is the ideal way to buy and sell.

Trees came and went in trailers, trucks, cafe tractors, back seats and in all manner of mobile wind-shelters, and the early birds were sticky-beaking well before the official start time of 10am.

Tree crops sold as well as trees and plants. The sausage sizzle provided a range of wonderful sauces including plum, apple and garlic, and pickled exotica. Other produce such as bags of our Bay of Plenty tamarillos sold like hot cakes. Waikato Branch took a percentage of profits from each seller, so fundraising should have done well today. Altogether a worthwhile and convivial occasion.
